Gaming subscriptions have exploded in popularity over the last few years, with Xbox Game Pass, Playstation Now, and EA Play all touting their own merits. Gaming subscriptions allow gamers to access an enormous library of video games for a low monthly fee, but which one should you choose? In this guide we’ll look at all the gaming subscriptions and break down the pros and cons of each to help you choose the subscription that’s right for you.
1. Best Free Gaming Subscription
Every week Epic Games gives out 1~3 games on their platform, completely for free. This is a no-brainer - just take it, the games are free to keep. Quality may vary each week. Some honorable mentions from the past are GTA V, Nioh, Civilization V, Celeste and many others. Make sure not to miss the next one!
2. Best Yearly Gaming Subscription
Microsoft’s new service gives you access to over 300 games on your Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC—and costs just $10/month. If you're looking to quickly expand your game library, Xbox Game Pass offers a cheap and easy solution. While Game Pass does not provide full ownership of any games, its relatively low price point makes it perfect for players who want to dip their toes into several different genres without breaking their budget. For instance, you can play AAA titles like Destiny 2 and indie hits like Ori and The Blind Forest all in one place with Xbox Game Pass.
Xbox is the subscription that updates most frequently, with new games almost every week! If you are looking for the long run, this is the one for you.
Xbox Game Pass also includes all EA Play games! (Tough it does not include EA Play Pro)
3. Best Subscription for Sport Games
EA Play Pro is the extension of EA Play that includes the most recent FIFA and NFL Games, in addition to 60 more games. For a fixed price of $15 a month (or $100 a year) it's great for sports fans who wants to get the little extra. It also has some great options even if you're not a sports fan. Such as Wreckfest, It Takes Two and Biomutant.
EA Play Pro also includes all EA Play games, which we will get to in just a moment.
4. Best Subscription for Budget
EA Play is the cheapest subscription on the list, starting at $5/month ($30/year). Don't let the low price fool you, the game library is massive (over 90 games!). The library includes many of EA's top titles such as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Battlefield V, The Sims 4, all the previous years' sports titles (pssst- there are mods to update squads 😉), and much more. It's not just good if you're trying to save some buck, it's great either way.
Notice that EA Play is included with both EA Play Pro and Xbox Game Pass
5. Best Subscription for open world games
If you love Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, Ghost Recon and Ubisoft, this one is for you. It includes almost ALL of Ubisoft games, and there are many of them. Every new Ubisoft game is added on day 1. This is the perfect bundle for both new players to the franchises or dedicated players. For $15 a month, you'll have access to every single one of Ubisoft's grand titles.
